The Western Bohemian spa triangle lies in the most western part of the Czech Republic. Its imaginary flash points are created by the well-known spa towns of Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně. This is one of the smaller tourist areas, which is however exceptionally compact. Number of mineral springs and their various attributes are unique worldwide. The historic tradition of the spa treatment in this region is complemented by the historic sights and various opportunities for an active rest. Entire area of this region belongs to the Slavkovský les protected landscape area. The third pillar of the spa region is the town of Františkovy Lázně. A smaller but the very beautiful town takes advantage of the mineral springs, of its location near the border with Germany, of the historic town of Cheb, and of the recreational water reservoirs of Skalka and Jesenice. Františkovy Lázně is a place with unique mineral springs with a high content of carbon dioxide, sulphur-ferrous fen bogs and natural seepage of carbon dioxide. All these natural resources are used in their original state to treat women’s diseases, diseases of the locomotive organs and cardio-vascular diseases. Františkovy Lázně boasts very clean air, parks and wooded spaces full of fresh greenery. The unique and world renowned therapeutic procedures are taken at places which remember the visits of rulers, famous writers and composers, poets and other important figures. Even today, mainly thanks to the generous and sensitive reconstruction of valuable buildings, the visitours can be dazzled by the typical architectonical styles for Františkovy Lázně, the late Victorian Romantic style and the Neo-classical styles of the 19th century such as the Art Nouveau and Classicism. There are still trees in the extensive wooded parks which can remember Johann Wolfang Goethe who had just fallen in love, despite being seventy four years old … The accommodation offered by hotels in Františkovy Lázně has a friendly, even family-like atmosphere. It is put the emphasis on the consistent interconnection of the local unique natural resources with a pleasant stay, attentive care and, in particular, the highly specialized knowledge of the medical specialists. The resulting effect is an amazingly successful rate of outcome based on the local therapeutic treatments. The long term effects after carbonic baths are felt over a period of time and only if the baths are taken repeatedly on a regular basis. The effects are shown in the better performance of the cardiovascular system, in the mild decrease of blood pressure in the pulse, in the lower occurence of chronic inflammatory processes in the body, and also in terms of rheumatics, and in the improved blood circulation in tissues and the vegetative stabilisation. For carbonic baths only curative waters from Františkovy Lázně are used with their natural content of carbon dioxide without any chemical or other additives. The water is gently heated to the required temperature before the patient takes a bath. The local natural mineral water has a relatively high content of dissolved carbon dioxide; its volume varies slightly depending on the source, the season of the year and other conditions. The average content of carbon dioxide at the mouth of the springs is roughly 1.5 to 2.5 g per litre of mineral water, i.e about ¾ to 1 ¼ l of gaseous carbon dioxide dissolved in one litre of water. The higher water temperature, the less carbon dioxide remains dissolved and the more escapes. In terms of curative effects, it is important for the water carbonic baths to combine the effects of the immersion, the right water temperature and the carbon dioxide absorved into the patient’s body. In a minute of a full body bath approximately 20 – 130 ml of dissolved carbon dioxide gets absorved into the body. This amount then causes a massive expansion of blood capillaries in the hypodermic tissue. This causes a mild decrease of blood pressure, but in partucular it decreases the work rate of the heart. Moreover the pulse calms down and the body supply to the heart improves, at the same time during the decrease of stress on the heart the supply of oxygen and nutrients to it improves. The transmission of oxygen from haemoglobin to the tissue is also improved. The body surface is less sensitive to cold. The bath has relaxing effects on the muscle system and the autonomous nerve system. Another effect is the increased discharge of urine. The use of natural curative resources makes Františkovy Lázně unique and irreplaceable. Františkovy Lázně have united power of nature to help your health!
